Dancing with Purpose: Shishya Partners with Sheows Centre

As a Bharatanatyam dancer with the Shishya School of Performing Arts for over a decade, I have always believed that dance is more than simply movement. It is a form of expression and reflection, giving back to those around you with the sheer power of connection through the celebration of culture. This year, our Bharatanatyam recital on May 18, 2025 is both a celebration of classical Indian dance but also an opportunity to give back. I am thrilled to share that the charity chosen for this year’s fundraiser is Sheows (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) Care Centre, a non-profit organization in India that provides care, shelter, and dignity to abandoned and homeless senior citizens.

Sheows, formed in 1976, aims to provide free food, medical care, housing, and emotional support for the vulnerable elderly in India, ensuring that every citizen is embraced with dignity and respect in their final years. Many of the women they serve have endured a lifetime of hardship and neglect. Sheows restores their security and dignity, giving them back their humanity in the most gracious and selfless way possible. Inspired by the powerful principle of Vasudeva Kutumbakan (“the world is one family”), Sheows embodies the spirit of service that Bharatanatyam teaches us to honor. Since their formation, Sheows has rescued over 10,000 abandoned elderly citizens and conducted more than 513,000 health checkups. They currently run three housing developments that serve as homes, hospitals, and sanctuaries for those who would otherwise be left invisible and unheard. Beyond their mission for the elderly, Sheows has also developed a sewing centre and a fully organic farm to promote financial independence and sustainable agriculture. Sheows has received numerous awards for their work and is sponsored by companies such as SONY and Jindal!

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Sheows Care Centre for the past few years, but my connection to their mission deepened profoundly when I was able to visit their facilities in person. During my trip to India in March 2025, I worked alongside the Sheows team to discuss Alzheimer’s disease and propose methods for advanced early detection among residents. Through this experience, I was able to witness firsthand the extraordinary passion and love that drives their work. Walking through their homes, I saw more than just a shelter, but a vibrant community where senior citizens were living with joy. Every conversation I had with the residents left me inspired by their resilience and touched by the genuine care they now receive. Sheows truly is an organization dedicated to the betterment of all!

As students and lovers of Bharatanatyam, we owe a debt of gratitude to the generations that came before us. Many of the women supported by Sheows Care Centres were artists, dancers (including Bharatanatyam!), and singers. Being able to carry forward their legacy and honor them all the same is an incredible opportunity for all students in Shishya! This year, the Shishya School of Performing Arts is proud to support Sheows through our annual Bharatanatyam recital. Rooted in a tradition that honors wisdom and compassion, the recital offers an opportunity to celebrate culture while uplifting a cause that aligns with those very values.
We hope you will join the Shishya community in using the power of Bharatanatyam to make a real-world impact! With every step we take, we move even closer to a more compassionate world!
