Stepping Into Rhythm: How "Just Chaperoning" Turned into Dancing My Way to Lisbon

by Zanetta Pierce

There are moments when an opportunity comes along that completely rewrites your plans in the best way possible.

To be completely honest, I didn't initially plan on stepping onto the dance floor. My lovely friend Ghazala had originally brought me on board with a very specific role in mind: I was just going to be a chaperone! I was perfectly happy to support from the sidelines, hold the bags, and cheer everyone on.

That all changed when our incredible instructor, Sukanya, stepped in. With a warm smile, she gently pulled me in and suggested I just "try" a few classes—no pressure, just to see how it felt.

Well, those few trial classes were all it took. Fast forward to today, and I am officially part of the Shishya School of Dance troupe!

Stepping into the studio to actually dance was a mix of nervous energy and pure excitement. Starting a new style is always humbling; you leave what you know at the door and open yourself up to learning new movements, understanding different rhythms, and embracing a fresh cultural expression. From day one, the energy in class has been electric—welcoming, disciplined, and deeply rooted in artistry and tradition.

Learning this new style has been a transformative experience. Every rehearsal stretches my body and mind, pushing me to master intricate footwork, graceful expressions, and precise storytelling through movement. But beyond the physical technique, the heart of this journey has been the incredible group of women standing beside me.

What started as a chaperoning gig has introduced me to a community of phenomenal, passionate women. There is a unique strength that comes from dancing in unity with women who uplift, encourage, and challenge one another to bring their absolute best to the floor. The studio has quickly become a space of shared sweat, laughter, and collective focus.

And the best part? We aren't just practicing for our own studio walls—we are preparing for an extraordinary milestone.

This journey is leading us all the way across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal, where our group will take the stage to perform! To think I went from planning to watch from the audience to actually traveling to Lisbon with this amazing group to perform on an international stage feels surreal and deeply special.

As we refine every movement and count down the days to Portugal, I’m so grateful Sukanya convinced me to "just try" those first few classes—and that Ghazala brought me into the fold in the first place. Stepping outside your comfort zone alongside powerful women is truly where the magic happens.

Stay tuned as we continue rehearsing, packing our bags, and getting ready to bring our passion and rhythm to the heart of Lisbon!
