Training for an 'Arangetram'

By Sanjana Kamath

Getting ready for my arangetram has been a whole new level of intensity. The practices are long and focused sometimes an hour straight of non-stop movement, expressions, and footwork. It’s amazing, but also super exhausting. I’ve learned that it’s not just about how much you practice, but also how well you take care of your body. One thing I always make sure to do before class is stretch properly,if I skip it, I definitely feel it the next day. Stretching helps me loosen up, avoid injuries, and just dance more freely.

Another big part of training that I didn’t think much about before is food. If I don’t eat right, I feel drained halfway through class. I’ve started packing a small, protein snack or a nutritious bar to have before or between sessions, especially if practice is two hours. Something with protein helps me recover faster, and if it has a little bit of carbs, it gives me the energy I need to push through. I also drink water with electrolytes after dancing to stay hydrated and avoid getting dizzy or sore. Using an apple watch has also helped me quite a bit making sure that i’m putting my best foot forward by checking my bpm making sure i’m using enough energy. The whole arangetram journey is more than just dance its an experience that will stay with you and for me atleast so far I have accumulated so many healthy habits.
