Senior Spotlight 1

Senior Profile: Kavita Amin

by Sonia Ivancic

Kavita Amin joined the Shishya School when she was 13. Her interest in dance began when she would watch home videos of her aunt’s performances as a young child and continued growing as she heard more about the Shishya community from some of her close friends at the school.

Being surrounded by Bharatanatyam for so many years, Kavi decided to join Shishya when classes were still held online during the pandemic. She learned the beginner dances in small online sessions with two others. While this made learning detailed steps and mudras more difficult, in the end, she realized these first couple of years paid off as she focused on cultivating strong technique. Since then, Kavi has come to love the Ganesha Shabdam while the Natanam Adinar was one of her most challenging,

rewarding pieces.

After the zoom years, Kavi was able to start dancing in the studio and has been a warm, reliable leader both in class and on the grand Perelman Stage of Carnegie Hall where she danced with the Shishya team this past January. Her favorite memory is from the 2024 annual day where she got to know some of the other seniors who she had not had class with yet while also being able to share the stage with her childhood friends. Kavi will be attending Cornell University to study Design and Environmental Analysis next fall. We will miss you at Shishya but look forward to everything you will do!
