NHSDA Gold Award Essay student 1

by SUHANI GOYAL

Dance has been an important aspect of my life, from being able to practice songs in the studio to sharing my culture through dance with performances. Bharatanatyam requires a great deal of strength and focus, especially when I have to perform long and tough dances, but I love it because it allows me to express myself and tell stories through movement. Performing for others is always the best part, whether at cultural programs or community gatherings, especially because I enjoy connecting people to the culture behind the dances and sharing the stories that have been passed down for generations. In addition, I have had the opportunity to mentor young students at the Shishya School of Performing Arts, something that has taught me to be more patient and a better leader. These students are always excited to learn new steps and express themselves, and seeing their happiness encourages me even more in my pursuit of Bharatanatyam.

Dance has allowed me to become more confident in myself and my abilities, and taught me the importance of maintaining discipline and focus throughout all parts of my life. As I transition to college, I aim to continue dancing for my school’s team and in cultural gatherings in the local community, as I want to continue to share my culture with other students. I also plan to use dance as a way to support others, whether through fundraising recitals where students can prepare and perform dances to raise money for underprivileged communities, or dance in senior centers to bring senior citizens the joy of performance and raise their spirits. Through every step I take, dance will continue to shape who I am and remind me of the power of movement to connect with and uplift others.
